When trading on Borsa Istanbul (BIST), being able to read price charts is essential.
This article walks through the basic steps of interpreting a stock chart.
1. Choosing the Time Frame
- Intraday trading: 5‑min or 15‑min charts
- Swing / medium term: 4‑hour and daily charts
- Long term: Weekly and monthly charts
2. Understanding Candlesticks
- Green candle: Close higher than open → bullish
- Red candle: Close lower than open → bearish
- Wicks show the intraday high and low.
3. Trend Lines
- Connecting lows → uptrend line
- Connecting highs → downtrend line
- As long as price stays above the uptrend line, the trend is considered intact.
4. Support and Resistance
- Price levels where movement has repeatedly paused or reversed
- Drawn as horizontal lines on the chart
- Breaking support may trigger deeper declines,
- Breaking resistance may start a new bullish leg.
5. Basic Indicators
- Moving Averages (MA, EMA) – Show trend direction and dynamic support/resistance.
- RSI – Used to track overbought/oversold conditions.
- Volume – Confirms the strength behind price moves.
Chart reading should always be combined with fundamentals such as earnings, news flow and macro conditions.
